Seriously, what’s the fundy beef with the “big bang”?
I know it’s not all Xians but the uniquely goofy American fundy set who do this, but I have to wonder WHY they try to do so much to "debunk" this theory.
Let’s recap:
The singularity theory was posited by a Jesuit priest.
The competing theory at the time was an unchanging eternal universe that needed no creator or cause – steady state theory.
The singularity/"big bang" theory met with initial scientific skepticism made somewhat more intense than usual for untested theories because they saw it as implying an act of creation. Of course once the radio waves and red shift came along, every respectable scientist started buying into it anyway.
While of course not suggesting or positing an external creator who launched this big bang, the theory at least allows room for one unlike steady state. There’s not a single peer-reviewed article that states that the theory is intended to, or can be used to, disprove claims of gods.
Nothing I know of in scripture (except highly speculative use of genealogies to determine age of creation) contradicts the theory or says how Yahweh did the creating. In fact "let there be light; and there was light" is a pretty good analogy if you’re into that sort of thing).
So Why then do the fundies not just say "Well the big bang stuff is fine as far as it goes, but we know our particular god flipped the switch!" ?
Only things I can think of are either the whole young earth stuff – decidedly dodgy exegesis even for theists – or confusing it with evolution/general anti-science attitude.
Thoughts?
Some interesting stuff so far but a few thoughts:
1) – I don’t think the theory DOES contradict anything said in the Bible. remember the 6000 yr old earth is based on some extremely convoluted and far from defnitive wranglings about how long a generation is. And even if you buy that, who’s to say that the big bang did not occur 6000 years ago, and that the speed of light was not changed by God to make it look far earlier?
2) The putative response of "God flipped the switch" is what i would expect a reasonably informed believer to say rather than a direct quote. Some do say things like this, but many fundies even when presented with the evidence, and the option of taking this position, continue to try to attack, in a silly way admittedly but still try, the theory itself. Examples can be seen on this site every day. I’m, sincerely, wondering why when an easy answer that does not in any way contradict their faith or the overwhelming evidence is that simple and available.
