Would you trade having children, for an indefinite lifespan (with NO aging?)?
I was reading some interesting stuff on research into the aging
process. Some of the more optimistic projections see major
rejuvenation and cessation of the aging process within 30
years. This is well within my potential lifespan (and almost certainly yours.)
Naturally, this could lead to a population nightmare. Unless, certain RULES were adhered to (like possibly not reproducing as the price you’d have to pay to get the anti-aging treatment(s).
Now, for me that’s an easy one. I never wanted to father kids, so I never did, and I’m quite sure I never will. Thanks to "prophylactics", it hasn’t cramped my style either (if you know what I mean..!)
So, I think I have a right to physically live as long as I’d like to! (Not FOREVER, mind you. Someday you’ve GOT to die! Forever is TOO LONG. But maybe 500 years or so would allow me to do and see everything I’d like.)
I’d definitely prefer this option, to the slow rotting process we call "natural aging" (which gives us NO choice.)

The thought of eternity gives me the
heebie-jeebies, and is one reason I
hope there is no metaphysical "afterlife."
All things must end, yes… even good things.

I’d rather have kids. Although there are many things in life and can give meaning, from what I’ve heard at least, there is no single greater joy than being able to bring up children.

I embrace aging.. I love my children and couldnt think of life without them now… I absolutely do not fear growing old.. its a fact and stage of life we will go through.. Its just another adventure on my walk of life to go through and enjoy the subtle differences of it.. Nothing, nothing to worry about..
sure, I would love that! But it’d be nice if I could decide, after like, 50 years, to stop those things and start aging, so I could have kids, because by then I’ll hopefully have lived all my dreams haha
While I love children, it’s not possible for me to be a father to offspring of my own. So, this would not be a difficult choice for me. I would choose eternal life (I know that violates your "rules", but what the heck, we’re just pretending anyway, right?). I could still adopt and/or care for children, and would have enough time to become very good at it.
The technology exist to achieve it, or at least to create animal models for extending the average useful life span. That is where research and research money should be going, in my opinion. You are very right. To extend the human life span without making adjustments to life style and population growth would be a serious mistake. There are so many ways to make such a thing workable, but the problem is with those who use ethics and morality as tools designed to oppose (resist change) and keep such research from happening, claiming that man is playing god. There are likely to be at least 2 maybe even 3 possible pathways for extending human useful life span for hundreds, if not thousands of years. All that is required is to just do the research and develop the necessary scientific protocol.
